This weird saying comes from the Home Alone movie franchise. Do you remember that? It’s an all-time favorite of many people. I’ve watched it a few times myself, but I have to admit I haven’t seen this scene shown above until recently.
As the story goes, a little boy named Kevin gets left home alone without his parents. A series of events happen where he fends for himself in very creative and funny ways. In the movie, Home Alone 2, Kevin gets lost in New York and uses a television set and a very loud voice from a movie to scare hotel staff.
It’s a trick he’s played in Home Alone 1 as well when he scared the pizza guy and burglars the same way. It’s such a unique and creative scene, no wonder the phrase has gained cult status, and people know it to this day.
While he scares the hotel staff and he’s playing the movie on the television very loud, the character in the movie says, “Merry Christmas you filthy animal” and starts shooting his gun. Since the hotel staff doesn’t see the man on the television and neither knows that it’s not a real person talking to them, they scare their pants off!
