Has someone ever told you “Merry Christmas ya filthy animal”? The first time I read about it, I felt like making myself ready to hear something wrong or harmful. However, it’s the exact opposite. If you’ve ever heard someone say that to you and wondered where it came from, this post will shed some light.

What is “Merry Christmas ya filthy animal” all about?
I’m going to go into more detail about it below, but this video will shed some light:
This weird saying comes from the Home Alone movie franchise. Do you remember that? It’s an all-time favorite of many people. I’ve watched it a few times myself, but I have to admit I haven’t seen this scene shown above until recently.
As the story goes, a little boy named Kevin gets left home alone without his parents. A series of events happen where he fends for himself in very creative and funny ways. In the movie, Home Alone 2, Kevin gets lost in New York and uses a television set and a very loud voice from a movie to scare hotel staff.
It’s a trick he’s played in Home Alone 1 as well when he scared the pizza guy and burglars the same way. It’s such a unique and creative scene, no wonder the phrase has gained cult status, and people know it to this day.
While he scares the hotel staff and he’s playing the movie on the television very loud, the character in the movie says, “Merry Christmas you filthy animal” and starts shooting his gun. Since the hotel staff doesn’t see the man on the television and neither knows that it’s not a real person talking to them, they scare their pants off!

Remember how I said this saying is really popular? As you would expect, there are tons of sweaters, shirts, pajamas, pillows, sweatshirts,
signs, socks and doormats available.
Here are two very popular sweatshirts on Amazon.
How about you? Do you know any other crazy Christmas sayings that you got from a movie or family that has stuck over the years?
